The Challenge

After the Bali terror attack of 2002 where 202 people were killed and 240 injured. The AFP lead task force approached Dr John Galloway to analyse the data to see if they could catch those involved. The need to catch the terrorists was paramount for the AFP as this was Australia’s largest loss of life in peacetime. The problem was that they had a lot of data and no way to structure it to make sense of the attack and the planning.

The Solution

Dr Galloway worked with the AFP data analysis team to analyse the sequence of events and locations leading up the attack, through Dr Galloway’s algorithms, in causal and link analysis they were able to identify key suspects.

The Results

The software was able to identify the ring leaders and key suspects leading to the arrest of 3 of the leaders and 15 others that helped in the attacks. The software was then used to predict and prevent future attacks.
